North East MEP Fiona Hall is reassuring local businesses and residents that contrary to media reports there are no EU proposals to ban selling eggs by the dozen. She said:

"The draft legislation put before the European Parliament does not propose a ban on selling eggs by quantity. Labels for things like eggs, bread rolls or fish fingers will still be able to show the number of items in a pack. All that is under discussion is whether the total weight of food items should be shown as well.

"Liberal Democrat MEPs thought that the requirement to show the total weight wasn't necessary for eggs, etc. Unfortunately our amendment was rejected, but this is an early stage in the legislative process.

"The important thing is for everyone to be clear that whatever happens we will still be able to buy our eggs by the dozen."
