EUROPE MUST FOLLOW AUSSIES ON BANNING BAD LIGHTING

12.00.00am GMT Thu 22nd Feb 2007

Commenting on the announcement that Australia is to ban the use of old-style incandescent light bulbs, Lib Dem European energy spokesperson Fiona Hall MEP said:

"Even Australia, which has refused to sign up to the Kyoto agreement on climate change, has seen the importance of saving energy by ditching inefficient light bulbs.

"Europe needs to follow suit. In the European Parliament I've been calling for action to take energy-wasting light bulbs and other energy-wasting appliances off the market.

"The UK government should be pushing for a European ban on incandescent bulbs as soon as possible."
