HIGH SPEED RAIL LINK MUST WORK ON EXISITING NETWORK

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 16th Aug 2007

The companies bidding to build the new fleet of trains for the East Coast Main Line are announced and include the company that built the Japanese 'bullet trains'. On the possibility of new high speed trains, Fiona said:

"Our railways are the most overcrowded and expensive in Europe.

"The gains from High Speed Rail links can be seen with the Eurostar link between London and Paris where passenger numbers jumped by 19 per cent in the first year.

"High speed trains have the potential to carry more passengers, at a faster speed, reducing each passenger's CO2 emissions.

"We need proven technology that links in with the existing network.

"People will only switch from air and road to rail if journey times are cut."
