NORTH EAST CAN LEAD THE WAY IN FILLING ENERGY GAP

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 18th Sep 2007

Fiona Hall spoke at the Liberal Democrat conference today on how the North East can lead the way in filling the energy gap with renewables and action on energy efficiency.

The energy spokesperson said:

"European leaders agreed in March to set a firm target of getting 20% of EU energy from renewables by 2020.

"Soon MEPs will be looking at legislation on how to put that 20% renewables commitment into place.

"The North East already leads the way on renewables - everything from biofuels and fuel cells on Teesside, photovoltaics at Northumbria University, and of course the New and Renewables Energy Centre at Bltyh.

"North East England has submitted a very strong bid to be the hub site for the UK Energy Technologies institute.

"It is the North East which is set to lead the drive to deliver in the UK share of the 2020 renewables target."
