Fiona Hall is not the only Liberal Democrat representing the region. In fact, in the past decade the Liberal presence in the North East has gradually grown due to the Lib Dem's strong local campaigning and Labour's neglect of the region.
The Liberal Democrats are the real opposition to Labour in the North East.
Sir Alan Beith MP is the Lib Dem MP for Berwick. He has represented the area since 1973 and is well respected throughout the region for his dedication to the North East and for defending its interests in Westminster.
Ian Swales MP represents Redcar. He was elected in 2010 with a 22% swing from Labour. Ian is campaigning to improve healthcare provision in Redcar and to bring more jobs to the area. In 2011, Ian was nominated as MP of the Year for his work to help secure the sale of the former Corus steel-making site to SSI.
Liberal Democrats control Northumberland council and are the largest opposition party in Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and Redcar. The party has the second highest number of councillors across the North East.
The Lib Dems previously controlled Durham City Council (until its abolition in 2008) and Newcastle City Council.
