Fiona has spoken out on a number of human rights issues relevant to the North East. She has worked to raise awareness on human trafficking, particularly relating to young women trafficked to the UK and forced to work in the sex industry.
Fiona also responds to calls from the local community to intervene when asylum seekers are due to be deported to their country of origin. The safety of asylum seekers deported to certain countries can be questionable and friends and community members in the North East ask for Fiona's help in raising the matter with the Home Office.
During the Olympics 2008 in China, Fiona responded to calls from the Chinese community in Newcastle to support New Tang Dynasty TV (NTDTV), an independent, non-profit Chinese language television station established by overseas Chinese, in their fight to be put back on air during the Games.
She has campaigned against child labour and called for the establishment of child helplines. She also supported the EU Child Alert System.
Fiona has supported emerging democracies as an election observer in Ethiopia, DRC, Haiti and Angola and headed the EU observation mission to Togo. Fiona called for negotiated solutions to the conflicts in the east of the DRC and in Zimbabwe and for the gross human rights abuses to stop.
