Back to Fiona's work in the North East
Fiona and Euro candidates Neil Bradbury and Chris Foote Wood demand access to EU funding for the North East currently blocked by the Government
Fiona is active in promoting EU funding possibilities for North East businesses, in particular with regard to research and development. A substantial amount of funding remains unused each year as not enough businesses and agencies are aware of EU financial help.
She put the media spotlight on the Labour Government when it recently emerged that the North East was not allowed to take advantage of extended EU deadlines for unused money from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) from 2000 to 2006 - even though Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales were given this opportunity. This decision has cost the North East an estimated £60m of EU money and a further £60m of Government match-funding.
In the light of the recent economic downturn, Fiona has also raised awareness for the possibility of retraining staff made redundant in the region with the help of the EU Globalisation Fund.
Fiona continues to raise public awareness for energy efficiency grants and renewable energy grants for North East households.
