North East England
Three Members of the European Parliament represent the 3 million people (1.9 million electors) who live in North East England. The region comprises Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley.
North East England: An Overview
Thanks to investment in research, education centres and science and technology, the region is in a process of real transformation. The North East is now considered to be at the forefront of the renewable energy and high technology sector, whilst also re-inventing itself as a centre of culture and art. The regional economy is worth £38.8 billion and, in 2007, the North East ranked among the top five performing regions for foreign direct investments.
The region's two international airports, Newcastle and Durham Tees Valley, connect the North East to Europe and also helps with the thriving tourism industry - now worth an estimated £4 billion of the region's annual economy.
As well as over 200 miles of coastline and beaches, the North East has an area of outstanding natural beauty, important world heritage sites and a mixed cultural history. Traditional industries such as mining, fishing, ship building and farming, make up parts of the region's identity, but so do new landmarks like The Angel of the North, The Sage and the Millennium Bridge, which attracts visitors from all over the world.
