International epilepsy organisations have moved to recognise Fiona Hall's support for better recognition and treatment of the disease.
The International Bureau for Epilepsy and the International League Against Epilepsy have presented a certificate to Fiona in "acknowledgment of her committed support for people with epilepsy".
North East Euro MP Fiona is calling for greater priority to be given to the disease, which is the most common serious disorder of the brain.
Fiona said,
"70% of people with epilepsy could be seizure-free with the right treatment, but only 40% receive such treatment.
"As well as the failings in treatment, there remains a stigma and prejudice around epilepsy that causes particular problem for young sufferers at school.
"We need to prioritise epilepsy as a major disease and recognise the significant burden it imposes on health resources. By encouraging research and innovation in the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of the disease, we can help reduce that burden and improve the lives of those people living with epilepsy."
