North East Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall, who visited Darfur in 2004, has welcomed news that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has backed its Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo and issued a warrant for the arrest of President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the people of Darfur.
Fiona said:
"For the women whom I met, who had fled to refugee camps after suffering horrendous assaults, this step has been a long time in coming. Some politicians wanted to shield President Bashir from justice, saying a warrant for his arrest would derail the Darfur peace process. But there can be no sustainable peace with war criminals safe in their palaces. The atrocities against the people of Darfur are well-documented and those who have perpetrated them should not enjoy impunity.
"I hope that today's decision by the ICC will also focus attention on the neglected humanitarian tragedy in Darfur and neighbouring Chad and be a spur to full deployment of the UN-African Union peacekeeping mission which has been blocked by the Sudanese Government."
