Fiona has given Hexham's new green Leisure centre the thumbs up after looking round the facility with North country leisure CE John Maude and centre manage Geoff Cant.
Heating of the building and the swimming pools is by solar thermal panels and a wood chip biomass boiler, with top-up provided but efficient combined-cycle gas boiler units.
Said Fiona,
"When I visited on Saturday afternoon the outside temperature was around freezing, but the building and pool were being entirely heated by renewable energy.
"Even on a cold winter's day the solar panels provide a useful amount of initial warm up, and the super efficient and automatic biomass boiler is able to do most of the rest.
"What is more all the wood for the boiler is being sourced within Northumberland - so the carbon footprint of transporting the fuel is very low too.
"I was very impressed to see such a high class leisure centre available as a community facility, with much thought given to assess for people with particular needs such as wheel chair users and parents with toddlers.
"It is great that the Leisure centre is making such a positive contribution to the health and well being of Tynedale residents - and yet without adding to global warming.
Fiona was accompanied on the visit by Tynedale councillor Philip Latham and Hexham Lib Dem parliamentary spokesperson Andrew Duffield.
