HARTLEPOOL HIGHLIGHTS INTERMITTENT NATURE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY

January 21, 2008 12:00 AM

Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat Energy Spokesperson in Europe, has questioned the wisdom of the Government's decision to commission a new generation of nuclear power plants, pointing to nuclear's record of unreliability.

The National Grid is unlikely to receive any power from the nuclear power plant in Hartlepool for most of this year. The Hartlepool reactor has been shutdown for months as a result of on-going safety concerns. In 2007 routine maintenance checks discovered corroded wire, and the power station has been shut down for repairs ever since. British Energy has now said that it is unlikely that the plant will generate power again before the second half of 2008.

Responding to the announcement, Fiona Hall MEP said:

"This recent news highlights the intermittent nature of nuclear power. The technology is complex and inherently dangerous. Any problems require shutdown for long periods on safety grounds. Is this the energy source we want the UK to be relying on in the future?"
