MISSING CHILD ALERT SYSTEM WINS RESOUNDING EU SUPPORT

July 17, 2008 12:00 AM

A campaign to set up an EU wide missing child alert system has reached an important milestone - it's gained the support of more than half of all MEPs, delighting signatory Fiona Hall MEP for the North East.

This means the European Commission will have to respond to the Written Declaration to help missing children, as 417 MEPs out of the 785 elected European representatives have added their signature to the campaign, and also puts added pressure on the 27 governments to deliver the scheme.

The alert system, which has received public backing from the McCann family, would activate as soon as a child is reported missing, with the media being provided with photos and basic details whilst police and border officials step up vigilance to help return the child to their families.

Fiona said: "I am very pleased that the European Parliament has responded to the EU wide call for support on this important matter.

"The success of the French scheme is plain to see, so I hope the French EU presidency will work with member states to push things forward quickly.

"Once implemented, the amber alert system will bring peace of mind to the thousands of British families travelling at home and abroad throughout the holiday season."
