Speaking ahead of the rally today, in which Gurkha soldiers and their families will walk from the Royal Courts of Justice to mark the first day of the High Court hearing on the issue of settlement rights for Gurkhas, Fiona Hall MEP for the North East, has urged the Prime Minister to grant citizenship to the veterans.
More than 2,000 Gurkhas who retired before 1 July 1997 have been refused permission to settle in Britain.
Fiona said, "The Gurkha soldiers are still a very highly regarded part of the British Army, and are defined by their total commitment and loyalty to this country. The least we can do is recognise this by granting them full citizenship rights; after all we have given the same rights out previously for much less."
A hearing will be held over two days from the 16 September, with submissions on behalf of the Gurkhas and the Home Department.
