North East Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall has added her name to a European Parliament declaration in support of the Blue Blindfold campaign to raise awareness of human trafficking.
Human trafficking has reached epidemic proportions over the past decade. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people are illegally trafficked each year, with the global market in human beings fetching around €32 billion a year.
In 2007, the Blue Blindfold campaign was launched to encourage people to be alert to the nature and extent of human trafficking in our communities. The key message of the campaign is 'Don't Close Your Eyes' to the signs of human trafficking - which can involve workers on farms or factories as well as in the sex industry.
Fiona is also supporting a call in the European Parliament to recognise slavery as a crime against humanity.
Said Fiona:"Human trafficking is a modern day form of slavery. In remembering the horrors of the historic slave trade it is important to be aware that slavery in certain forms still exists. We must fight hard in order to end the slavery which still exists today in towns across the UK, because of human trafficking."
