North East Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall has welcomed news that the College of Commissioners is set to agree draft proposals on illegal logging at its next meeting (15th October).
Explained Fiona: "This is a vital step. MEP pressure persuaded the Commission to push ahead in 2006 with Voluntary Partnership Agreements, through which certain countries are now signing up to stop all export of illegally logged timber.
"But we always knew that further proposals were necessary to ensure that no illegally logged timber or timber products enter the EU market.
"I will be looking at the Commission's proposal very carefully to make sure it is watertight and leaves no loopholes."
