Commenting on the case of Multiple Myeloma sufferer George King who is moving to Scotland from Teesside in order to receive treatment with the drug Velcade on the NHS, North East Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall said:
"This case highlights how badly the Government have handled NHS reform in England. Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are starved of cash and not able to offer treatments available north of the Border.
"It is very disappointing for Myeloma sufferers that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) did not recommend Velcade in October but I hope that decision is not final. Health Minister Andy Burnham MP assured me last month that the decision was open to appeal and that the appeal stage was an important part in reaching the final guidance.
"Velcade is a drug that is fully licensed for use in the EU. The real problem is that because of Labour's mismanagement of the NHS English PCTs don't have enough money to pay for all the drugs they need, including some which are NICE recommended."
