Fiona will be attending a Holocaust memorial concert at All Saints Church, Newcastle on Saturday 27 January and 'Dignity of Difference' at Newcastle's Theatre Royal on Sunday 28 January.
She said:
"Holocaust Memorial Day has been declared an international day of remembrance by the United Nations and Newcastle is to be congratulated for putting on a series of events to mark the occasion.
"Holocaust Memorial Day is about the present day as well as the past. It is to remember not only those who were victims of genocide by the Nazis but also the victims of more recent persecution in places like Bosnia, Rwanda and Sudan.
"It is good that on Tyneside we are pausing to think about the racism and discrimination faced by victims of persecution, both in the past and today."
