Commenting on the news that the UK Government has blocked binding targets for renewables in an EU energy meeting today, Fiona Hall who is the Lib Dem European spokesperson on Energy said:
"It is breathtakingly hypocritical of the Government to claim that it is the champion of action on climate change when it is them that are blocking targets for renewables.
"It is meaningless to set a grand target for reducing carbon dioxide emissions without breaking that down into a roadmap of precise objectives which will achieve that reduction. No business would dream of setting an overall target without a detailed plan of how to get there."
Today's meeting of EU energy ministers comes ahead of the EU's annual spring summit of 8-9 March. Brussels wants 20% of the EU's overall energy mix to derive from renewable sources by 2020 with Germany, Spain and Italy supporting the plan. France and the UK are pushing for non-binding targets. The EU's chief energy spokesperson Andris Piebalgs has said that ministers must find agreement ahead of the key spring summit in March. As a result of the meeting today the targets will no longer be mandatory.
