Earlier this year Billingham residents contacted Fiona concerned about the re-opening of the old ICI Anhydrite mine.
After meeting the residents, Ms Hall wrote to DEFRA on the matter.
She said:
"DEFRA have confirmed that ICI will not permit the mine to be used for nuclear storage. However, DEFRA gives no such specific re-assurance with respect to NPL Estates, who are the potential purchasers of the mine from ICI.
"In fact, the minister states that NPL Estates Ltd will seek permission to use the mines for the disposal of "hazardous waste".
"He confirmed that an application for a permit would only be determined after public consultation.
"I want to ensure that this process is carried out in close consultation with the local community and in a fair and transparent manner to ensure that whatever is stored on this site it not harmful to human health or the environment, now or for future generations.
"If any resident would like a full copy of the letter, I am happy to supply it."
