Commenting on the local elections, North East Member of European Parliament Fiona Hall said:
"The message of the local elections in the North East is that people like what the Lib Dems do.
"We have kept control in Durham and Newcastle. In Durham we even increased the Lib Dem majority.
"Across the region we took a swathe of sets from both the other parties.
"Against Labour, Lib Dems were up 9 in Wansbeck, 6 in Castle Morpeth, 5 in Wear Valley and 3 in Darlington.
"Against the Tories, Lib Dems were up 6 in Berwick and 1 in Tynedale where we gained a seat from the Conservative group leader.
"The Conservatives failed to make progress in the region, even in their strong areas like North Tyneside.
"In the places they controlled or influenced the council (Tynedale and Berwick) they lost seats to the Liberal Democrats.
"This was a good election for the Lib Dems in the North East.
"We consolidated our previous successes and made further significant gains."
