Fiona is backing plans to create an EU-wide telephone hotline for victims of human trafficking to help reduce the abuse and violence they suffer.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), some 2.5 million people throughout the world at any given time are the victims of modern-day slavery. Many of these are women and girls forced into sexual slavery or pornography, while men are forced to work as labourers for little or no pay, the UN agency has said.
Local Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall is supporting the creation of the hotline, which will provide victims of human trafficking with an opportunity to talk and receive assistance from an impartial listener without fearing recrimination regarding the chain of illegal activities caused by their situation.
Fiona said:
"Victims of human trafficking need to be able to talk about the abuse they suffer and receive impartial help and advice.
"The creation of a free multilingual hotline would be a big step forward in the fight against this modern-day slavery"
