MEP for Durham Fiona Hall will visit the Durham Summer Festival this weekend.
The Liberal Democrat who is the party's development spokesperson in the European Parliament and a member of the Durham City Fair Trade Partnership group will join members in celebrating achieving Fair Trade City Status for the city of Durham.
Speaking on the importance of Fair Trade, Ms Hall said:
"The Fairtrade Mark guarantees a fair and stable price to farmers in developing countries. It also guarantees consumers a top-quality and environmentally-friendly product.
"Fair Trade is such a simple and direct way to make a big difference to the lives of poor families in developing countries. Helping people to support themselves through trade is a hand-up, not a hand-out."
Fiona Hall also congratulated Stockton on Tees who achieved Fair Trade status on 12 June.
