Fiona with local campaigners on the railway bridge over looking the site of the mines
Following the announcement that the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) would be conducting two months of tests in Billingham's anhydrite mines from September, Fiona said:
"The prospect of these tests has raised anxiety in the local community. There are a lot of questions to be answered about the nature of the tests and about exactly what waste substances the authorities are so keen to get rid of into the mines. People are understandably concerned that Billingham might become a dumping ground.
"The local community deserves a full and detailed explanation and the chance to discuss the issue. I am writing to the Secretary of State for the Environment Hilary Benn to ask what reporting back procedure he intends to put in place once the two months of tests are completed.
"Local people must not be left in the dark. This inspection by NPL must be fully transparent and there needs to be an open discussion about what the inspection reveals."
