Politicians from the region last night praised Newcastle City Council for leading the way in the battle against climate change.
Cllr. John Shipley, leader of Newcastle City Council, chaired a discussion at the Lib Dem party conference in Brighton that pointed to the responsibilities of cities in leading on action to tackle climate change.
The city has been chosen as the leading core city on climate change and has been praised for its work in leading on climate change policy.
Wendy Taylor, Newcastle City Council portfolio holder for the Environment and Sustainability spoke on the leadership and partnerships the city has undertaken in its work towards carbon neutrality and zero waste for the city.
Fiona Hall, the region's MEP also spoke and highlighted the importance of taking immediate action on energy efficiency now, she said:
"Partnerships between European cities help in sharing best practice on on energy efficiency.
"Taking action on energy efficiency is the simplest thing we can do to tackle climate change immediately.
"Schemes such as Newcastle Warm Zone provide excellent examples for other cities to lead from."
