The release of a list detailing the first 180 post offices that are facing the prospect of closure means that it is only a matter of time before post offices in the North East appear on a similar list.
Commenting, Parliamentary Candidate for the City of Durham, Carol Woods said:
"We cannot let local services in our regions deteriorate any further. The proposed closure of 2,500 post offices nationwide translates into four post offices being closed in each constituency. That means four fewer post offices for the people of Durham City.
"I, along with my Liberal Democrat colleagues across the region, will be representing the views of local people and fighting for our post offices to remain open. The Lib Dems are the only party representing the wishes of the people and fighting the closure of local post offices."
The region's Member of the European Parliament, Fiona Hall said:
"It seems that decisions based on finance are being made in central London that are set to ignore the views and needs of people at the local level."
