The Right of Petition granted by the European Union has delivered clear benefits for the North East. This right has been used to great effect in instances such as the Path Head Petition. (See News Release dated 13th September 2007)
Commenting, Fiona Hall MEP, who strongly supported the Path Head Campaign, said:
"Any individual or association can petition the European Parliament on any subject that comes within the scope of activity of the European Union.
"The Path Head Petition is one such example. Landfill sites come under European Directives on waste and the environment, so it is valid to petition the European Parliament about the Path Head site.
"When the Committee on Petitions receives a petition it must first decide whether is admissible of not admissible. If it is admissible then the Committee can take action.
"Path Head is also a great example of how the power and determination of the people involved can drive a campaign forward.
"As the local Member of the European Parliament, my role is to offer advice and support with petitions, and to back campaigns where appropriate, as I have backed the Path Head Petition."
