Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP for the North East, has signed a Written Declaration in the European Parliament, calling for the EU to recognise diabetes as a major disease in all member states, and prioritise diabetes in the new EU Health Strategy.
"Diabetes is a serious, chronic and progressive condition affecting over 25 million people in the EU, with an expected increase of 16% by 2025. Diabetes complications represent 5% to 10% of total healthcare spending.
"I hope that the EU's new health strategy will encourage all Member States to establish national diabetes plans. Moves to encourage the consumption and production of healthy food should be a part of that plan."
