EUROPEAN ENERGY POLICY NEEDS FULL FREE MARKET

Commenting on the European Commission's Green Paper on Energy, Liberal Democrat Energy Spokesperson in the European Parliament, Fiona Hall MEP, said:
"Today's Green Paper marks a break from the past and paves the way for a coherent, strategic European energy policy.
"In proposing a Renewable Energy Road Map and emphasising the importance of energy efficiency, the Green Paper underlines that security of energy supply lies in Europe's own hands.
"For too long, Europe has been a collection of islands as far as energy policy is concerned.
"But if today's vision of a strategic energy policy is to become a reality, a great deal more needs to be done to liberalise the European energy market.
"Until the second electricity and gas directives are properly implemented, UK energy customers will remain isolated and subject to higher prices.
"The Commission must make full liberalisation a priority otherwise the coherent European energy strategy will remain a paper plan."
