Reacting to yesterday's fourfold price rise of wholesale gas, Fiona Hall MEP, the European Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Energy, said:
"This serves as a stark warning to both the UK Government and the European Union that the current energy market is not sustainable.
"Efforts to fully liberalise the energy market across the EU have failed because some member states continue to drag their feet. This haables been a long running battle for the Liberal Democrats but now the UK Government and the Commission must act urgently and swiftly.
"High prices are affecting both industry and consumers and some companies will not get through another year unless action is taken.
"High and unstable prices mean that companies are finding it increasingly difficult to plan their annual budgets and to afford the energy required by their business. Individual consumers are increasingly worried about being able to afford to heat their homes.
"Clearly this is a moment for gas users to cut their energy needs as much as possible by adopting energy efficiency measures, but only a full liberalisation of the European gas market is going to resolve the crisis."
