Speaking in advance of the Spring European Council where security of energy supply is expected to top the agenda, UK Lib Dem Energy spokesperson Fiona Hall MEP said:
"Whilst it is important that the Council tackles the wider political question of security of supply, due attention must be paid to the demand side of the equation by putting real effort into fully implementing energy efficiency measures.
"In taking forward the New Energy Policy for Europe, the Council also needs to bite the bullet on implementing gas and electricity liberalisation. States that fail to comply should be dealt with in the appropriate manner and fined.
"Recent price hikes have shown just how high a price Britain is paying for the failure of other countries to open up their gas markets."
