North East Lib Dem Euro MP Fiona Hall has described the Government's energy review as a sham, following the Prime Minister's openly pro-nuclear speech to the CBI.
Fiona Hall said: "What is the point of pretending to go through an energy review when it is clear that Tony Blair has already made up his mind?
"The PM is making a massive mistake - and many of his ministers past and present think that too. Nuclear is hugely expensive, presents security and health risks, and leaves a legacy of radioactive waste for future generations. Those who live near existing nuclear power stations such as Hartlepool now have the prospect of being dumped on all over again.
"What we need is immediate substantial investment in a range of renewable energy forms and in energy efficiency. A fifth of the energy we use is simply wasted. Instead of embarking on a slow and expensive nuclear power programme we should be committing to better designed buildings, proper insulation and more efficient household goods and lighting. That would do the trick - and much more quickly."
