Fiona Hall MEP for the North East with some of the trunks that have to be transported to Strasbourg every month.
The North East's Liberal Democrat Euro MP is urging people to support a new petition to end the European Parliament's costly monthly trips to Strasbourg.
The Campaign for Parliament Reform hopes to collect one million signatures for its "one seat" petition. It calls for MEPs to do all of their work in Brussels instead of being forced to travel to Strasbourg for full sessions of the parliament.
"It is absurd and illogical that we spend a lot of money on having a second parliamentary seat in Strasbourg. There is no need for 732 of us, our staff and our trunks of files to leave Brussels once a month.
"Not only is this a total waste of taxpayers' money, but the traveling involved wastes energy and adds to carbon emissions.
"MEPs cannot change the rule on meeting in Strasbourg - it is up to national governments to agree to scrap the arrangement. I hope this petition will force the UK Government to take action."
