North East Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall, speaking from the Joint Parliamentary Assembly with representatives from African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, which takes place this week in Vienna, has expressed her disappointment that the Foreign Secretary will not be attending the crucial UN Small Arms and Light Weapons Review Conference which begins on 26th June.
Fiona, who spoke yesterday in the debate on Sudan and the ongoing violent conflict in Darfur, said:
"The easy availability of small arms and light weapons fuels local conflicts. The UN Conference is a vital stepping stone towards the adoption of an International Arms Trade Treaty and the Foreign Secretary's absence is a missed opportunity."
Fiona Hall also highlighted that instability and continuous violence are creating a health time bomb.
"Last Wednesday the WTO reported an outbreak of cholera in Darfur and 500 people have died of cholera in Southern Sudan this year. Aid workers are being ambushed while delivering medicine to control the outbreaks."
