Traditional church organs will not be silenced by new EU legislation, a Euro MP has confirmed today. North East Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall has welcomed a categorical assurance from the European Commission that new laws designed to curb the use of lead will not affect church organs.
Organ manufacturers had feared that new laws on waste would lead to the banning of lead in organ pipes. But following the meeting of the EU Technical Adaptation Committee on 26th June in Brussels, the Commission has stated that organ pipes fall outside the scope of the directives on hazardous substances and on electronic waste, saying that "The European Union has no wish to jeopardise this ancient tradition."
Fiona Hall, who recently visited organ makers Harrison and Harrison in Durham to hear in detail about the potential problem said:
"Organ manufacturers and enthusiasts will be delighted that the European Commission is now singing from the same hymn sheet as we are when it comes to protecting our historic church organs."
