Fiona Hall, the North East's Euro MP has welcomed the European Commision's decision to issue warnings about the risk of using sun beds.
The full effects of sun beds are not known yet because they were not in widespread use before the 1990s.
However, a Newcastle University expert warned that in 2003, out of 1,800 deaths through skin cancer, one hundred may be linked to sun bed use.
The Liberal Democrat, who is a member of MEPs Against Cancer and took part in Cancer Research's Race for Life this month said:
"Sun beds used in tanning salons emit the more powerful UV-B type of radiation.
"Just as in natural sun, young people and those with fair skin are particularly at risk.
"The seriousness of the risk of skin cancer is so strong that Ireland plans to ban the use of sun beds by people under 15.
"It is time to give a clear message that misuse of sunbeds can have fatal consequences."
