Liberal Democrat Euro MP for Northumberland, Fiona Hall, will be meeting Ben Bradshaw MP this afternoon, voicing local fishermen and councillors' calls for mackerel quotas to be made available to fisheries from the North East.
Fiona said:
"The Government need to ensure that there is a quota for Northumberland fisheries to catch mackerel. The initial quota offered was so small that it was closed as soon as it had been opened.
"There is no reason why Northumbrian fisheries should not be offered a larger quota especially with such substantial stocks of mackerel off the Northumberland coastline.
"Overfishing is not an issue on the Northumberland coastline because mackerel are caught using long lines rather than nets."
