Commenting on the nuclear scare at Sunderland Central Station, Fiona Hall MEP for the North East said:
"The problems in Sunderland because of the breakdown of a train carrying radioactive waste serve as a timely reminder that there is still no accepted solution for dealing with radioactive waste and that it is dangerous not only in the short term but for thousands of years.
"Surely the Government should be concentrating on finding an environmentally safe and publicly acceptable method of dealing with the tonnes of radioactive waste we already have, instead of embarking on a nuclear programme which would create even more dangerous material."
