Fiona is calling for restrictions to be placed on electrical goods that waste energy such as incandescent lightbulbs and plasma televisions.
Lightbulb company Osram have recently estimated that if every household in the UK switched just one of its old-fashioned lightbulbs to an energy saving version, a power station could be closed down.
And new Liberal Democrat research has revealed that new LCD and Plasma TV sets will lead to a substantial rise in carbon emissions by 2010.
The extra energy used by LCD/Plasma televisions equates to an average increase in bills of £58.50 a year.
Fiona Hall, who is the Lib Dem energy spokesperson in the European Parliament has said she will push the European Commission to make electrical goods a priority for regulatory action.
Ms Hall said:
"Drastic action is needed against inefficient electrical goods. Energy is being needlessly wasted, which is adding to global warming and costing consumers a lot of money. I want to see proposals from the Commission to phase out goods using the most inefficient types of technology - whether old-fashioned items like incandescent bulbs, or new but energy-guzzling goods like plasma TV sets. Using electrical goods shouldn't literally be costing us the earth."
