UK Liberal Democrats today swung a key vote in the European Parliament on the issue of nuclear power.
In a report on European energy strategy, MEPs narrowly rejected an attempt by the pro-nuclear lobby to merge nuclear into targets for renewables. The Parliament also rejected the claim that current science ensures that nuclear power plants are safe. Sweden discovered, for example, a major flaw in its nuclear safety system as recently as this summer.
Commenting, Fiona Hall MEP; Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Energy, said:
"On those two key issues shaping European thinking on nuclear energy, it was the Liberal Democrats who made the difference."
