This has been a week for sledging, following the first significant snowfall this winter in many parts of the region. Because of global warming, there are now some winters when sledges stay in the shed.
The coming into force this month of the Kyoto Protocol is a very small step towards tackling global warming. The targets for cutting emissions must soon be raised and more nations must be brought within its scope. It is vital that the USA is persuaded to join with the EU in taking action.
Problems like global warming can only be tackled by nations working in partnership, and most people welcome the fact that the EU has led the world on this issue. I suspect that many also recognise that attitudes in Britain often have a lot more in common with those of our European neighbours than with those of President George W. Bush.
