Commenting on the announcement of job losses at the Jarrow site of Rohm and Haas because of the closure of the Ion Exchange Resin (IEN) production line, North East Lib Dem Euro MP Fiona Hall said:
"This is sad news for South Tyneside. The workforce on IEN production is highly skilled and professional, but it is very difficult for UK firms to compete against low-wage Chinese production.
"The Government needs to act swiftly to put in place the EU globalisation fund proposed by Tony Blair, in order to support workers like those at Rohm and Haas who are suffering the sharp end of changes in the global economy.
"The loss of IEN production on Tyneside also underlines how important it is for the UK to keep ahead of global competitors. Research and innovation are absolutely vital in this respect. That is why we need to make sure that the European budget settlement for 2007-2113 funds a big increase in investment in Research and Development."
