North East Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Fiona Hall has signed a Written Declaration in the European Parliament, supporting greater recognition of Child Helplines across Europe. The Written Declaration has been backed by the NSPCC.
'Children should have the opportunity to talk to someone about their concerns
and Child Helplines undoubtedly provide an essential service. In 2003 alone, around 123,000 calls were documented on abuse and violence against minors in Europe.
'I want the European Union to support child helplines as an integral part of
the child protection system, and for this be recognised by the Commission
and the governments of Member States.
'I would also like to see children's rights networks and NGOs working on behalf of children playing a role in policy development at national and European level, and for Child Helplines to be eligible for EU funding like other human rights sectors'.
