Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP for the North East, is adding her support to the Local Democracy initiative by talking to a group of 14-15 year olds at the Duchess's Community High School, Alnwick, Northumberland, on Thursday 4th November, at 11.30am.
Fiona plans to chat to the students about the role of a Member of the European Parliament, and answer any questions they might have.
The Leader of Alnwick District Council, Councillor John Taylor, said:
'It was important to involve young people in local decision making as they often have well informed opinions that make a valuable contribution to issues that affected a community.'
'In order to do this, we need to find out what they are thinking, and ensure that we break down any barriers and facilitate a better understanding of each other's roles.'
'Ms Hall's visit to the Duchess High School should give the pupils an insight into the work of an MEP, and I know that she will find their input as useful and interesting as members and officers of the council do when they have the chance to interact with our younger citizens."
Ms. Hall said:
'The European Parliament is the only supranational directly-elected assembly in the world, and it is a model which other continents aspire to.
'The Parliament is an exciting place to work in and I'm delighted to have the chance to tell the students all about it.'
