North East Liberal Democrat Euro MP Fiona Hall has today taken part in an event held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, to highlight the importance of combatting diabetes. Currently 45 million people are affected by the condition, and the number of sufferers is expected to increase to 58.6 million by 2025.
Testing and raising awareness is a central part of the bid to tackle this epidemic, and Fiona Hall today had her blood glucose level and cholesterol checked by a medical professional, to highlight the importance of preventative medicine.
Ms. Hall said:
'The Liberal Democrats are keen to increase the emphasis on screening services. In particular, the Lib Dems want to see the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) asked to devise clinical guidelines for a 'Targetted Personal Health MOT'.
'People would be invited to take whatever tests were appropriate for them and the results would allow them to receive treatment or lifestyle advice and tackle any emerging problems sooner rather than later.
'The purpose of a Health MOT programme is simply to aid early intervention. I support more funding for research, development, piloting and evaluation of new screening programmes for conditions like diabetes.
'I hope the government will support these plans, and take the issue of illness prevention seriously. Diabetes is on the increase, and it is important that we tackle it as a priority'
