Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP for the North East, has pressed the European Commission on the future of the Ghost Ships in Hartlepool.
Following the ruling by the Basel Convention in October this year, that ships taken out of service should be considered as toxic waste and that their movement should be minimised, Ms. Hall has asked what steps the Commission will be taking to ensure that no more decommissioned ships from the US reserve fleet are sent to Hartlepool in the North East of England.
Ms. Hall said:
'I want to know what conclusions the Commission has drawn from the Basel Convention ruling, and in particular, what actions the Commission will be taking to ensure that the four decommissioned US ships currently docked in Hartlepool are broken up without damage to the environment.
'For the people of Hartlepool, this is an uncertain and worrying issue. I hope that by pressing the Commission on the future of the Ghost Ships, I will be able to provide answers for local people.
