Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP for the North East of England, has called for clarification from the European Commission following widespread confusion amongst farmers in the region.
Ms. Hall has queried what species of plant are included in the term "other herbaceous forage", as used in the EU regulations governing the CAP 'Single Farm Payment' scheme.
Ms Hall said:
'The Single Farm Payment is an important subsidy for farmers in the region, and the uncertainty surrounding the term "herbaceous forage" cannot be allowed to continue.
'I have asked the Commission to clarify whether the term includes fodder crops such as maize or if it refers only to species which are commonly grazed alongside grasses in permanent pasture.
'I hope that by challenging the Commission to make this term clear, I will be able to provide the necessary answers for farmers in the region.'
