North East brick manufacturers (including two in the Bishop Auckland area) have been left in the lurch following Government confusion over the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme due to start this January.
Said North East Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall:
"With the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) about to begin, the UK Government has yet to establish whether UK Climate Change Agreements will be treated as equivalent to emission trading controls under the ETS.
"Firms who are members of the Climate Change Agreement and have invested heavily in order to reach Climate Change Agreement targets simply don't know where they stand.
"The Government has left brick and ceramic manufacturers in the lurch. I have therefore written to the European Commission today asking for clarification on the position of UK climate Change Agreements.
